Philips VOIP841 Firmware Upgrade Procedure Interruption and Mute Calls

In the beginning there were only positive reviews about the Philips Voip841 phone. A perfect choice for those – like me – live abroad and want to be in touch with the family while not having the PC on all the time.

But a few days ago I discovered a lot of bad reviews about it… Whenever I tried to call using the voip841 phone or whenever someone called me, the call was active but both ends were silent. Looking around (also here) I quickly discovered it is a widespread problem with the phone’s firmware.

Well, Bruce Marriott’s post convinced me to try the firmware upgrade.

Yes, I know the firmware upgrade on philips voip841 must not be interrupted, but what to do if the page reloads automatically and suddenly shows up:

“The connection has timed out
The server at is taking too long to respond.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.”

Well… the phone freezed and trying to access via web interface wasn’t working anymore. So I managed to recover the corrupted firmware doing this:

  • Removed the batteries from the handset
  • Unplugged the base from the power line
  • Replaced batteries in the handset and waited until the phone displayed the message saying it is “out of range, check base”
  • Plugged the base back into the power line
  • Went to handset settings/options and reset to default settings (not keeping network settings)

I am not sure all the steps above are needed, or should be done in this order to work. Anyway, I got skype running again and the web interface accessible. So I tried once again to do the firmware, and it now works fine! Hope this helps other people out there with the same problem.

Despite all the problems until now and perhaps those that may come in the future… it still remains a good choice to be connected to skype and your landline at the same time while having the PC off.

  1. Hi, I tried doing the same thing and it didn’t help at all. The call is still silent after the ringing.
The firmware version from the factory settings is the latest available at the moment, but I still decided to “upgrade” it.
Funny thing is though that people CAN hear me when making skype calls but i cannot hear anything, zero. Landline works just fine but there are cheaper phones to make landline calls only.
This phone is driving me really crazy!!

  2. Hi juan… well… in my case both ends were silent, maybe you need a different solution. But have you tried to reset to default settings then unplugging the base and reconnecting it again?

Also, check if you are not running any p2p software when using the phone, I found that having a p2p software running ruin my skype calls…

It’s been a few months my phone is working very well. I have also set up a fixed IP address to avoid dhcp conflicts when I start my pc…

  3. Hi, I do run p2p software every once in a while but I’m not sure i’ve ever have any of them running at the same time I’ve tried to use the philips phone.
And of course I have tried unplugging the base over a million times!!

Did you set the fixed IP address in your router or through the web based utility for the philips phone?

  4. hmm I don’t remember exactly how I did the IP setup… I think I’ve used the cordless phone under “Settings -> Network” or similar… and then allowed all traffic using the router firewall…
I am out for a few days, I’ll try to check when I get home, let me know how you’re going.
Do you have Skype running in a PC? Some people had problems because skype used the same ports on the PC and phone…
You probably have seen many forums… I got a lot of help from here: http://forum.skype.com/lofiversion/index.php/t81916.html
Hope you can fix it at the earliest. Feel free to ask more.

  5. Totally worked, and very annoying. I have no lan line so this is all we have and our cells. Not sure if this helps but on reset pin is default 0000 – all zeros there. Hope this holds up.
